I have two databases with several thousand names and can probably help here. I would need your full name and date of birth and for married ladies, your maiden name. For some people, the info goes back to 1500 or so, for others only two generations. I looked up one of the admin staff, and she is descended from a McDougle (first name unknown) who was born in 1630 and was a member of Cromwell's garrison, stationed in Scalloway. McDougle later became Doull so possibly all the Shetland 'Doulls' are distantly related.

Hello, My name is Julie, I have been researching my family roots for over a year now and I am thrilled to learn that my great, great grandfather John Henry Ramsay was born in Sandvoe, Northmavine in 1818, he left the Shetlands to work on the Liverpool Docks c1840. Thanks to the bayanne site I have traced my family back to James Ramsay b 1725. I have found and contacted lots of Ramsay decsendants from my home town of Liverpool to Plymouth, South Africa and Australia. Now I am wondering if I have any relatives still living in Northmavine. I would love to hear from anyone who is related. Also does anybody know how I can find out the name of James Ramsay's (b 1725) wife as there is no mention of her on bayanne. I look forward to hearing from any kin. Best wishes, Julie. My e-mail address is julieegingell57@yahoo.com

Hi Julie........Welcome to the forum. We still have a lot of Ramsays here in Northmavine, but I'd need to do a bit more digging to see if any of them are related to you. Perhaps someone reading this might be aware that they would be related to you? If so, please get in touch.

Yes, absolutely, my grandfathers mother came from Northmavine, and I have his diary with the names and addresses of other relatives in this area, James Jamieson, from North Gluoo(sp?) Ollaaberry, and Andrina Jamieson, Mary Jamieson and a Mrs Duncan from South Gluoo, Ollabery, I cant read his handwriting on the North And South Glriss, or Gluss, I just cant figure it out, but these would be from the 40's, and my great grandmother was Jessie Fraser Jamieson, and her mother and father were John Barclay Jamieson, and Christian Watson Mouat all from the Northmavine area, and if you had any info on them it would be really great, thank you ahead for any help you can give me on this....I will look forward to hearing from you...

Ok , just ran off and got some internet intelligence, and I probably dont have to tell you how wrong I had those towns, its North and South Gluss, anyway, as I said dont have to tell you that, but I thought you might like to know I figured it out..if I could insert a happy face there....I would, again, look forward to hearing from you, there are lots of other names I have, like on my great grandmothers fathers side, but I wont go there ....yet...thanks for your help..its great, love the site.

Good luck Gillian - sure you'll hit gold. This might well be of interest to our NCDC <Northmavine Community Development Company> chairperson amongst others! I'll try giving her a nudge.
