WOW FABULOUS I am in California, I was born in England and we emigrated to the U S when I was 10, I have been back twice, the last trip my daughter Heather was with me and we went up to Scotland and visited the grave site of my Grandfather and his mother, father and several of his siblings, I took photos, during that trip my cousin Sally (my dads side) helped me locate the Shetland relatives, then my Aunti Mavis..(Ross) gave me Grandads diary, and the names were in it, I didnt have them in my genealogy that I had been working on, I have been searching for answers and only just recently discovered this web site, and look at this, I am just sooo excited to be meeting you...and I really look forward to hearing from you, I have some pictures of my great grandmother, and pictures of the church where she is buried in Scotland. My full name is Gillian Jamieson Cooke, my mother is Joyce Jamieson Ross and my Grandfather was James Jamieson Ross, so you can see we kept it in the family. Its a small world...take care and I am so looking forward to hearing from you, I am trying hard not to babble but this is such fun, what did you think when I posted the names? You lost me on the "PM" you for your personal email,is it ok to post such here???ok, I'll stop...toodles

Hi, when you have the time its fine, I know that you will do this for me when you can, I am a very patient person, wished it was tomorrow when I could come over, but right now I am out of work and the prospects are very slim in this economy...but I appreciate the offer, it is something to work towards, and that offer is reveresed as well, any time you would like to see Southern California....Disnyland .....the beach any and all of what we have here...you are just as welcome to use us a staging point to see the sites...its nice here now, 75 to 80 most days, it just gets really hot in the summer over 100 every day...not nice, actually its the winter when we have our "best" weather, this area is well known for the sunny winters, we have a lot of resorts in the area that cater to what we call "snow birds", people that come from colder climates and winter over here.. On that web site that Bob gave me, several men on there were fishermen/crofters..I have seen that word before , what is a crofter? Just curious...well take care, talk to you soon..toodles

Sounds like you're getting well acquinted with your relatives Gillian . In answer to your query - a crofter is what you would perhaps call a 'smallholder'.......small-scale farming. Due to our geology and our topography here in Shetland, the land can't support large farms, so folk here have 'crofts' instead. Most folk keep sheep on their crofts but some have 'kye' (shetland word for cows) and grow some crops - 'neeps' (turnips), 'kale' (cabbage), 'tatties' (potatoes) etc

Hi, yes, I remember seeing her name, she and my great-grandmother were sisters, so yesindede we are related...cousins, somewhere in the 5th degree, but none the less related, Bob gave me a web site that is awesome, it has so much information on it that it is almost overwhelming, I have been extracting names right left and center, it doesnt have a lot of info on my greatgrandmother, as to whom she married and her children and where and when she died, so I want to get in touch with the site and give them all the info I have, its great...love this, its soooo exciting to find everyone I can...stay in touch and if you would like any info, let me know...and I would like to see the information that you have...let me know your e mail address on the PM and I will send you mine....ok...take care talk to you soon...Gillian
