Interesting stuff! Didn't know that there were any water lilies here.. Would be nice to see. Are there normally many? <envisaging Fifi's Water Lilies - a la Monet's Water Lilies.. ;D ;D>

I think it was the Shetland Wildflower book that I once read about them in Fiona and I have always wanted to see them but never really knew where to find them (until now thanks to heimdal!) - like you I always picture a Shetland version of the famous Monet painting! ;D

Thanks deltinglass! Just unearthed the book and found the pic and the following - "White Water-Lily (Nymphaea alba) Flowers white, very large, opening fully on sunny days; leaves circular, large, floating. An unmistakable native plant confined to a few lochs in the West Mainland. Flowering July-August." Shetland's Wild Flowers, A Photographic Guide, D.MalcolmWell, I've just had a go recently with watercolours for the first time in blah de blah years so as long as the blighters don't flower in the next few weeks when I'm away on holiday then I might have a go.. <thinks: or oils mebbe.... or acrylics... >

There are waterlilies in the Loch of Stenvatsto (sp ?) which is at the junction where the road from Dale of Walls meets the Sandness road. A mile or so before you get to Sandness itself. They are not flowering yet but soon will be. They are protected, SSSI or some other such thing. There's also some on a peerie loch on the road into West Burrafirth......sorry to be so vague, but you can spot them fae the roadside.

The water lilies have been growing there in the same west-side lochs for a long time now. Thet even get a mention in George Low's tour through "Orkney and Schetland 1774" in the section about Sandness. (I just have the modern paperback version)
