I have just seen another little bird out the Greenbrae window. I think it was a female Blackcap. It was brownish with a redish-brown bit on the top of its head. About the size of a sparrow. Can the bird experts help out here?

It could very well be a Blackcap Pat, although you say that it was reddish on top of its head, this description fits a first year juvenile Blackcap.
Size of a Blackcap = 13/15cm " " " Sparrow = 14/16 cm
So it sounds about right, not sure about centimetres in old money though.

Redwings hundreds of them, a few dead on the road no doubt the Hoodies will clear up the cadavas. A few almost met their end by flying across the path of my car when I was going into Lerwick twoday.

Aha! A couple hit my car in Northmavine, whilst driving home from work the other night in twilight conditions. Wasn't sure what they were, but just suddenly shot out from the left and into the car.

Wish my eyesight was better. . because I saw a little bird in my garden this morning. It was very small about the size of a wren its colour seemed to be greenish, it was feeding in my tree unfortunatly I did not see any eye markings [ hence my comment on my eyes], The wee Robin is also back for a wee visit, it was in my bird bath. .

This weekend:
Saw a robin in my garden too at Cunningsburgh.
Saw a red admiral butterfly at Burra - seems very late for them here in Shetland, although I believe they do fly elsewhere until November.
These redwings do seem to be determined to hurl themselves at oncoming vehicles!
Can't help with the little green bird georgeg. Sorry.

Pat. I did not find out what it was, I saw some Mallards yesterday and today I took a picture of some Lapwings and a Redwing. I filmed an Otter the other day, only to discover I had pressed the pause button. Drat...I hope I can get it again, the problem with them is they don.t stay very long on the surface, the one I thought I had on camera came out of the sea.

Hi georgeg
I once saw Peregrine Falcons in Wales when I was on holiday. Do you know how many birds of prey, if that's the term, have been recorded in Shetland? I expect you would include owls etc. in this?

Patioman would be the person to answer your question I think Alas, Patioman seems to have left us, but perhaps there is someone else out there who could take up this topic? Thanks for the website and for posting the photos. I think the Lapwing is one of Shetland's much under rated birds. It is very beautiful and of course the 'Peeweet' call always is there. Pat
