Wasn't sure where to put this - whether it should go here or in the Crofting section. Anyway, saw a strange thing whilst driving to work yesterday morning. We're quite used to seeing birds pecking away at roadkill, but this was a sheep apparently eating some kind of large bird on the road. A bit of a double-take.. Ain't sheeps herby-vores?!

I'm back! - did anybody notice I'd been away.......? No, thought not........
Anyway, sheep certainly do prefer salad to a roast dinner any day, but if they're perhaps lacking a certain mineral or nutrient, they'll try almost anything. It's very common for a newly-lambed ewe to chomp away at the afterbirth, presumably for its high protein content (with milk production in mind) - nobody eating breakfast, I trust?
So I don't think you need to start worrying about a motoring breakdown in da Kames........on a dark night.......no other cars about......no mobile reception......nothing but a sinister low baa-ing sound (faintly mocking?), getting closer.....then some pairs of eyes in the dying glimmer of the headlamps......

Hello Bonna corse we'd missed you!!! Thought you'd disappeared off the face of the Earth. Nice to see you back again.
Fiona - I would agree with Bonna about the minerals etc...but maybe Shetlanders are breeding vampire carnivorous sheep now!!! Yikes!!! I think we should be told.

Bonna dearest, of course you have been missed terribly and am blyde tae see dee postin again. <Dodgy attempt at Shetland ;D> Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering if it was something like that - [glow=red,2,300] vampire sheep alert!![/glow] - perhaps drinking the blood for nutrients or summat.. Now yer spookin me... <poster courtesy of the excellent film posters thread on Shetlink with speech bubble by Fifi>

Never thought I would ever take photographs of sheep but thought these were just a little bit different. Anyone heading to the Eshaness lighthouse might see them by the roadside near West Loch.

That little black and white one has the same markings as a Balwen sheep - a rare breed sheep found mostly in Wales. They also have four white socks, a white tip to their tale and a white blaze.
Pretty little lambs!

User 'Morula' has posted this link to Shetland Sheep markings on Shetlopedia.com and I thought it might be of interest here too www.users.zetnet.co.uk/ssbg/markings.htmlGood to see the old names are still in use, and not only in Shetland.

Yes, there are an amazing variety of colour ways. A friend of mine breeds Shetlands - katmogets and sokkets and they are lovely - but not as docile as my Dartmoors. But, for ease of handling they are just the right size. I love the poster too - nearly bought one last year at a show but forgot to go back to get it. Someone is coming to look at my ewe lambies today with a view to buying some and it always makes me very sad......I hate to see them go.
