I have been meaning to put in a thread about the various sea mammals we have around our shores and sightings of them for a while now. I have been watching the various postings about otters etc., and I reckon we could give them a place in their own right. So if you spot any killer whales, otters or simply get a great shot of a seal then post it up here. Meanwhile here is a good site for you to peruse: www.nature-shetland.co.uk/naturelatest/latestcetaceans.htm

They just sit there all day... or if they're on a rock oot in the water a bit, until the tide gets too high. They seem to enjoy watching the frantic shopping.

Difficult to get this one and I ended up with loads of shots of waves ! just because of the delay on the digital camera, between pressing the button and the picture being taken. This minke whale (Shetland name 'herrin hog') circled the boat for ages, and I estimated it to be about 25 feet long. Taken off Helliness, Cunningsburgh.

(Shetland name 'herrin hog')... Taken off Helliness, Cunningsburgh. You learn something new everyday. Thanks for that Heimdal. Did you catch any Tusk off Helliness? Pat

We catch tusk occasionally, they are not as common as they used to be. Cod on the other hand are becoming more common year by year. Good place for piltocks too, not that I am a piltock fan, but when we have family home on holiday, I usually let the bairns catch a good few, then take them to the Catch pier and feed the seals. That is a really great sight to watch them doing underwater acrobatics to get the thrown fish before the next one gets it ! I'll have to look for some pics of the seals at the Catch, they are HUGE !

Wow!!! No hang overs there then! Or are they queuing for Somerfield to open? Lovely photograph Heimdal worth more than a million buy-one-get-one-frees. 200 metres from our local Somerfield is Holywell town centre inhabited by nothing more than the odd traffic warden ;D and a few pigeons.

Brilliant photo heimdal. Probably the best view in the country 200 metres from a Somerfield store. Any challenges? Pat

These things certainly help lighten the mood when off to to 'da shop'. Might make a trip in and go see them... best guaranteed spot for seals around. I'm still going to put it down to them having a laugh at just how relaxed they feel and rubbing it in our faces. Pesky seals!

Brilliant photo heimdal. Probably the best view in the country 200 metres from a Somerfield store. Any challenges? Pat In response to the challenge From Pat I have totally and undemocratically appointed my self as the the representative for South Derbyshire to shamefully admit total and utter defeat in that challenge. Over the years there have been many battles fought, won and lost, never in the annals of history has a defeat been of such magnitude, absolutely totally devastating defeat. Owdonaminit, by this time tumorru ar criketers wull havgonanlost th'ashes by 5 nowt. Moderation follows, the Somerfields challenge/defeat is quickly reduced to second place. Mind you all this makes for misrubble wikend.
