Can anyone help me to find birth and death details for my great great great grandfather, John Gilbertson Please? His whole life was spent in the Northmavine area from what I can gather. He was born circa 1795, and married Elizabeth Smith - born 1793 in Niddister - on 9 Feb 1819. They had nine children together between 1819 and 1839. Any information on John would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I97478&tree=bayanne_1This link, which i found through the shetland family history website, looks like it may be the family you're looking for. From the page I've copied the link for, you can click through each child of your great, great, great grandfather and find out who they were. When I have a chance, I'll have a proper look through your family tree and see if I know of any living relatives you may ahve here in Northmavine. Hope this helps........and welcome to the forum! Where do you live hazelgilbertson?

Thanks Maree. Yes, that is the John Gilbertson I'm looking for. The Bayanne website is utterly fantastic, and I've already managed to glean quite a bit of information from it, which is great, but I've come to a complete standstill with John. I've tried all forms of searches on Scotlandspeople to try and track him down in birth and death registers, but he's nowhere to be found unfortunately. He's the original man of mystery it would seem.......
As for me, I currently live in Bexley in Kent, and I work in London. I've been here for over 20 years now, but I originally come from Buckie on the Moray Firth. My dad was born in Grocken, and lived in quite a few places in Shetland before granny and grandad moved the family to the mainland. They're both buried in Lerwick now though.
Thanks again for your post Maree, and thank you for the warm welcome.

Looks like your family have gone from one end of the country to the other hazel!!
I've been having a peerie look into your family tree and it's massive!! Many of your relatives seem to have between 6 and 9 children each!! I started to look at one individual branch of your family tree and found that you have relatives here in sullom where I live. I would also hazard a guess that you are related to half of Northmavine!!
One of your relatives here is very keen on family history and may be able to help but she's away at the moment. I could ask her about John Gilbertson when she gets back if you like? As I said you're probably related to half of Northmavine and if we examined more branches of your family tree, we'd probably find a further treasure trove of living relatives!! I'll pm you the family branch I looked at.

To quote "aitch" Maree, you are truly remarkable. Thank you again!
Yes, it does seem that my family have been on a bit of a mission to populate the planet doesn't it?
I'd be really grateful if you could have a chat with my relative in Sullom when she gets back. It's dreadful that I didn't know that myself isn't it? It's probably even someone my dad has spoken about, but I get so confused with all the different branches of the family. That's another reason why I'm doing this. It would be nice to work it all out.
Happy birthday for the other day by the way. I hope you had a lovely time, even though you ended up having to do a spot of work for me. Sorry about that. x

Hi guys. I'm sorry, but I haven't been on the website for ages. I've just started a new job, so I've had to knock the family tree on the head for a bit.
Thanks for the information on William Gilbertson, George. What a fantastic soul to get himself up to Shetland at the ripe young age of 85! He's certainly nipped my butt into getting myself up there too, I can tell you.
Thank you to the lovely Maree also for speaking to my relative in Sullom. I do really appreciate it. xx

Hello Hazel. Your kin [ Willie Gilbertson ] is back in Shetland again..
He popped in to my bit yesterday.. we had a real blether and I showed him this thread about your search of your family tree..
The only thing is..... I told you that he lived now in Buckie.. well that was my mistake.. he lives in PERTH...
he really is a smashing guy. full of humour, and fit as a fiddle.. as you know he walked up to the highest point of Ronas Hill last year.. but the emergency service had to be called out to assist him back down.. that was not caused by his inability to get back down on his own steam..
IT was because he slipped his leg in a rabbit burrow twisting his leg badly..
So he may be old.. ;D BUT he still has the sense to ramble in groups.. UNLIKE me...
If that was to happen to me on my rambles ower the moors.. then I think I would end up the same as the GUNNISTER MAN ;D
