Hello, I have been reading with interest, the messages about tourism on this forum. I am finally coming to visit your beautiful Island this month(I am in the United States). My Grandfather was born and raised on Shetland, and I grew up hearing about his life there. I guess I shouldn't expect it to be the same? :-) I do want to respect the places I visit, and really enjoy museums and such, but I also am fascinated to learn how people around this Earth live and interact. How can this be accomplished and leave both parties happy? I do try to learn the customs of the places I visit, so as not to be intrusive. That is one of the reasons I have been checking out the various web sites on Shetland and Scotland. But I do love to talk to people. And we would love to meet any relatives who may be interested in meeting us. So...I guess I need suggestions?

Hello hampdenquilts and welcome to the northmavine.com forum I am not an "official meet and greeter" on here by the way but no doubt one will be along shortly! Where did your grandfather come from originally in Shetland? - we are quite an assorted bunch on here but maybe someone will be able to help you find some of your long lost relatives

Thank you for the lovely welcome! I am just so excited to be visiting Shetland. I am bringing my Mom for her ? birthday. My Aunt and their traveling friend, are coming also. My Mom has never been in an airplane before, so this should be quite the experience. We were going to take the ferry from Aberdeen, but I convinced her that a quick plane ride to Shetland was a better idea! Anyway, my Grandfather was William Bruce Jamieson Ratter. He was born in Lochend, Northmavine on November 7, 1901. His parents were Gilbert and Christina (Jamieson) Ratter. The Shetland Family History site and various other websites have been a LOT of help. We are bringing photos that we have from Shetland. Isn't the Internet great!!

Yes, this is when the internet comes into its own! Ooh, exciting! I have no doubt that you'll get replies regarding your family from Lochend - we've got a few people on the forum who live in Lochend, so hopefully they and others might be able to help. Hopefully, you might be able to meet some of your Shetland relatives when you come over!

Have to agree that the Internet is marvellous, I think it's just brilliant how you find out/learn so much without even leaving your own home nowadays thanks to the Internet:)

Hello! I knew this was going to be a fantastic trip! We are hoping to meet people and figure out relationships. We have some names and dates to add to the geneology information already collected. I can hardly wait to get there! Would love to meet you, Pat. Is email the best way to get in touch?

Hi hampdenquilts I'm looking forward to it. ;D Send me a pm on this site and then we can exchange addresses etc. I note that our common ancestor was one Peter Ratter born before 1754. You will get loads of information from the Shetland Family History Society at the Hillhead in Lerwick: www.shetland-fhs.org.uk/Contact the secretary there and they will be most helpful to you. You can also try some of the links on here: northmavine.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=genealogy&action=display&thread=1173803647Tangwick Haa will also be very helpful when you arrive.

Hello hampdenquilts,
I do live in Lochend and was born in the same house as WBJ Ratters father Gilbert. They moved to live in the Croes, he was manager of Hay & Co's shop at Lochend from 1902 to 1912. Picture of his family in Karen Inksters book Voices From The Past.
Not got you on my family tree yet, but still looking for connection.
(nice quilts by the way)

WOW!! We have been looking for addresses, but haven't had much luck. Why didn't I ask more questions when Grandpa was alive? Isn't that usually the way of it, though. I had known he ran a store, but the details are sketchy. Cannot WAIT to explore Shetland! Thank you for the compliment. The site is a work in progress. Computers are not really my strong suit!
