... i focused my attention on da Dore Holm. Lovely pics, David. Have you seen any of Bruce Wilcock's photos? In particular his shots of the sea crashing over Doreholm on a freaky wild day last Aug? I was just in at Bruce's t'other day and got him to print some of the wild Doreholm shots plus some of the huge crashing waves on the Eshaness cliffs. Superb. He has some brilliant pics - very artistic & atmospheric. Some in black & white, great textures, some frustratingly familiar landscapes but taken from very unusual viewpoints.

The most annoying thing about the trip was... i missed a massive wave breaking over the top of the dore holm. Had taken so many photos that i'd maxed out the memory. Just as the wave broke and i thought "good god", no picture taking happened. So i have no photo of it, just the memory.
All about being in the right place at the right time and not running out of memory space!

Yah Fiona....Braewick Cafe has the most spectacular photo of the Doreholm I have seen. Bruce took it the day after a raging storm. Does he have a gallery at da Smithy in Hillswick and if so, does anyone keen when it's open? As well as the photos, Bruce does some splendid peerie sculptures. Some years ago, we purchased a bronze figure of a man casting peats!

Some years ago, we purchased a bronze figure of a man casting peats! Sorry for the delay, mhay - been working. Yeah, I think the Doreholm photo was taken in Aug. <?> Bruce does have a photography workshop gallery in one of his outbuildings but I think he was talking of removing the pics for the winter. During the rest of the year, it's a case of when either he or Brenda are in, it's open. They would normally have a sign on the gate if it was open and it might be advisable if someone was travelling a distance to call to arrange a time for a visit. If someone was interested in seeing his stuff and/or purchasing a print, your best bet would be to give him a call to see if he's going to be doing it over the winter - 01806 503300. He has a good set up for printing his own pictures with high quality inks and papers and he also makes his own mounts and frames. As well as selling complete framed pictures, you can also get mounted prints or just a print on its own. Bruce has a photography website - www.shetlandinfocus.co.uk. Yes, he has amazing talents as a blacksmith and farrier and has won various national awards. He can make almost anything from a variety of metals, whether it be cast or hand-forged. When the Amenity Trust wanted copies made of fancy parts for guttering and downpipes, Bruce was able to cast replicas for them. You name it and he can make it. His hand-forged tools <he can make just about any tool> are sought after and as a result of him getting a blacksmithing website a few years ago, he now has an Californian agent selling his tools in the States. www.brucewilcockforgings.com

Just had a look at Bruce's photo's... the picture opportunity i missed at the Dore was very similar to that which Bruce's captured... but there is no chance I would have captured it as well. Twas good enough to see it in person though(however much i wish I'd got it on film... ) Next expedition is to climb Ronas Hill with camera in tow... hopefully capture the light as the sun sets, clear sky... actually some clouds would be good... just praying that the high pressure will settle over us and give me a clear day!

A couple in ode to the shortest day of the year. 9:30am looking south-east, sun just about to appear... taken from front door. Spotted 3 jets overhead, rarely so many so close together... Heathrow?

Hello I am new to this forum and came across your photos. As a Sony A100 user I think you might like to hear a few pointers as to why I made my choice. Reviews of 400D v A100 were pretty even with no outright winner. Firstly I have been a Minolta AF user for over 20 years (previously Pentax) and the autofocus was a boon. The cameras 7000,9000 & 9xi (particularly the last two) always had a chunky solid feel in the hand and were to professional standard. I feel the A100 continued the trend. As to the lenses, Canon does indeed have a wider range NEW. The important thing to rememember is that Sony accepts all Minolta,Konica and quality independent manufacturer's brass and glass. This was the main reason on my plumping on Sony as I could keep all my telephoto lenses 70-210,400,600 and 75-500 which converts to 100-300,600,800 and 100-750. Which you will agree gives a pretty good throw for wild life. All lenses mentioned are available at reasonable cost on ebay. I wish I had your scenery locally to take such dramatic pictures. If there is one piece of equipment that you need - as you are new to SLR photgraphy it is a sturdy tripod. This will eliminate any camera shake you are worried about with the Canon. Hope this helps!
Best of luck taking more pics! Look forward to seeing more.

Welcome to the forum. As the receiver of a Nikon D80 from Santa, I was interested to read your tips. With regard to the tripod, I would say this is a very good idea.........A handy fence post to lean on is also a very useful piece of equipment!

Hi George, Thankyou for replying to my message and implying I know what I am talking about. Unfortunately "she who must be obeyed" would disagree! I cannot advise which camera to choose, my route into Sony was via Minolta af which was absorbed by them. as has been pointed out the Sony does have anti-shake. Canon, I understand, has had great internal dust problems with their cameras which Sony seem to be on top of. Now, this Sigma lens (good independant make) will give you the equivalent of 105-450 in 35mm when attached to a digital camera. You say this lens is old, no problem, if viewed thru it is clear. I know for Sony/Minolta/Konica SLRs, you can obtain on ebay a converter for Pentax ( certainly on the old M42 screw thread) for about £7. If you can connect it it will work! The downside is that you will not have autofocus. Manual focus at long range would probably be preferable and 450 is good for wild life. And, no film costs make duff pics a minor problem.
