Couldn't see another thread on Collafirth Hill, so here goes. <but feel free to move this, mods, if you want > We were up Collafirth Hill today. A couple of things came to mind - Wouldn't a signpost at the bottom be a good idea? Something to say that it's Collafirth Hill and show that it's a viewpoint, etc as tourists might drive past it. Although there are still a few potholes near the bottom of the road, <the rest is fine further up> I'm fairly sure I saw it being mentioned in minutes somewhere, so hopefully they might be filled in. The interpretation board is suffering badly from the usual malaise of fading and being battered by the elements. Some of it is legible but most not. <the dark text has survived better!> Pity, as it had some good info on it.

Fi, if I mind right da Amenity Trust is on the case re. getting a new info board made up.
The road, however, is more problematical - there's a long-running issue of "whose road is it" between da MOD and da Cooncil, which has yet to be resolved. Da Community Cooncil added its paltry voice to the calls to resolve the issue soon and get it fixed up properly.
Even if you disregard the tourism issue, there's a lot of important kit on them thaar masts, coastguard radio, mobile phones, (TV), etc. etc., which needs decent access.

Thanks for the info, Bonna. Interesting about the 'whose road is it' question. If the MOD are still involved in the equation, I presume they either still own land there and/or equipment up there? If so, how much do they own? I wonder what normally happens regarding access roads to hills with masts? Who takes responsibility? <Although I know this involves equipment from various sources, which might complicate things.> It might be better if the council took it over though and it was maintained to a reasonable standard. You make a valid point about the need for access to equipment. Yes, I probably read about in in Community Council Minutes. And I wouldn't call their voice 'paltry' necessarily. It's always another voice for the community and folk as a group would probably have a bit more clout than individuals.

I'd just like to concur with Bonna with regard to the question of responsibility of the Collafirth Hill road. The NDC have also looked into this issue and have so far drawn a blank. From memory, the SIC appeared to be willing to adopt the road if the MOD brought the surface up to standard..........obviously the road wouldn't benefit from a full gritting service! Perhaps the issue could be brought up again at both the next community council and the NDC meetings respectively?

I think this is the right place for your posting Fiona Good replies from Bonna & Maree, I tried the tourist bit when I first arrived here but couldnt find the Collafirth hill road (wanted to go up the hill as I heard there were fantastic views at the top) so yup a signpost would be a good idea providing we were permitted to go up the hill.

Folk, this was discussed again at the Community Council tonight. Our MP is apparently getting involved in an attempt to interest the MOD, and the CC is going to write to him to express our anxiety over the issue. There may also be a sign put up meantime, advising people that at present this is not a maintained public highway, therefore any use is at the users' own risk.

Well, there you go. Speedy, informative replies and super-prompt feedback from the Community Council meeting. Thanks! Hopefully the road issue will be sorted out.

Collafirth hill is a great place to see some great views. every time i have been to Shetland i have taken the time to go to the top and take some photos, every time it has been different, once it was snowing the next time it was sunny, if i could fathom out how to post photo's on here, i have some great shots to share with everyone (well, i think so)

Yes, I agree Fred, it's an ever changing panorama.
A few of our members were giving some advice to bonna a few days re posting photos, but I can't find it all. Perhaps if any of the members can direct you where to find it we'll be able to see your piccies.
