Last year NCDC managed to secure funding from the Climate Challenge Fund to build 12 community polytunnels in Northmavine. Landowners/users 'host' each tunnel on a piece of their land and share part of the structure with other folk in their community. Polytunnels have now been built in Eshaness, Hillswick, North Roe, Ollaberry and Sullom. I've been lucky enough to get a share in a PT at Sullom, near to where I live. Over the past couple of weeks we've had great fun, as a family, getting our part of the PT ready for planting. We've created a few raised beds, gathered seaweed as fertiliser and spread this in the PT. Yesterday we moved 4 tonnes of earth into the raised beds so we're ready to get plantin noo! Any advice/info on what grows and when would be really appreciated. Here's some piccies:

Wow! How brilliant! I'd love a polytunnel. My friend has a huge one and it is always full of tomatoes, lettuces, peppers, radishes, ohhhh....all kinds of things. Trouble is she laways grows too much and ends up giving much of it away. What a great enterprise.

It's handy having friends like that bm! Here's some piccies of some of the produce so far. Four of us are sharing this section of the polytunnel and the goodies we might produce. Another couple of folk have a section on the other side, so quite a few families will benefit from this community venture here in Sullom. The polytunnel 'kits' are also on sale fae the NCDC office. It's a great opportunity for folk to get together to share the cost of putting up at PT and the 'fruits of their labour'. It's turning out to be a real sociable, fun hobby for us all here.
