Came home a few weeks ago to a howling wind and rain. Went into the garden and found a tiny day old sparrow chick on the lawn. It was seemingly dead so picked it up by a foot to throw it over into the field away from the dogs. It was stone cold but then it twitched ever so slightly and opened its beak. Cupped it in my hands and breathed on him. Here he is after four days. He is now 12 days old and doing well! Took him to the RSPB yesterday to get some meal worms for him. They were amazed that I had managed to rear him.

When I was at school we were awarded team points for good work, I believe later they were called stars. Whatever they are called nowadays Benjiesmum, I award you with a bucket full of them, a fantastic achievement. Awww! Thank you aitch! He's still growing strong! I have to take him everywhere with me because he needs regular feeds. So the other day he went to Conwy, then to a vintage tractor show and tomorrow he is off to Nantwich Show!! LOL!

Your little "spadge" gets about more than I do Benjiesmum ;D ;D This is one of the most remarkable story's I have read on looking after a bird and I have read a few over the years. I traveled to the Orkney Isles a couple of times in my birdwatching days, one of the guys I used to stay with was the RSPB appointed bird "doctor" for the islands and he was licensed to keep injured wild birds that could not be released into the wild, he is a great guy and I think even he would be amazed at this story. Power to your elbow and the best of luck to you and of course "Spadge"

What is the latest on "Spadge" Benjiesmum. Little Spage is now about 6 weeks old. He went down to Lampeter yesterday to help deliver a ram to a friend and was not phased at all. He is in this story, aitch: www.homealabrador.net/bb/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=9787I think you might know that I do them for Labrador Rescue but Spadge features in it too! We also saw a woodpecker and some red kite. A lovely day! I rang the Flintshire Wildlife Trust on Monday and they are going to get him used to being in the wild. Luckily they had another little sparrow in when I took him. My eyes leaked terribly when I left him. I miss him but know this is the right thing to do.

Hello Benjiesmum, I followed the link to the story of Buddy and Spadge, not surprisingly it touched quite a few people, me as well. I think the tale of Spadge is a wonderful one and would make a bid for the top nature story of the year. Well done Benjie' you played an absolute blinder and I wish Spadge all the very best for the future.

Thank aitch! I still miss him so. But it's best for him. Here he is before I took him in on Thursday. I rang on Friday to find out how he was getting on and the lady said he was now perching right at the top of the cage which he is meant to do.
