I know Northmavine quite well, but i've never found a bird hide.. does anyone know of any in Northmavine or any other ones in Shetland, i do know that the owners of Sandgarth were thinking of constructing two at their bit, one overlooking the saltmarsh, and one at the burn.. an awful lot of twitchers visit Shetland, and provided that they are situated in the right place, i think it could only be a good thing..

Thanks for that information Allan, an update on Sandgarth, the owners told me that it would be too expensive for them to do it thereself, and funding would be hard to get from the authorities, yet one of the signposted trail walks down to the saltmarsh starts at the entrance to there property, it just seems a shame that they can't get help, many birders go to get photos of the migrant birds which visit their place in a regular basis.......... The birds which have visited their bit in the last few days have been Siskin Dunnock Blackcap Chaffinch Robin Two Merlins and Bar Tailed Gotwits..

Yes George – apparently there’s plenty of public £1000s for gimmicks like this www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2010/04/02/shetland-transport-trucks-latest-promotional-tool-for-isles-tourism Gimmicks like these by our tourism bodies makes me really angry – a lot more nature hides across Shetland would be a far better way of spending the money and providing a service to the tourists, and would last longer than an expensive paint job on a truck. Tourists are already being turned away from Shetland because of lack of accommodation so why on earth waste money targeting drivers whizzing past the trucks at 90mph on European motorways. It’s lack of detailed information and service here in Shetland that’s the problem that we’re failing to address. Anyway that’s my rant for today.

And a very good rant it is Allen.. We have lots of trail walks in Shetland, I think it would be nice to site benches where we could rest on our walks. Well some of us and lots of tourists are getting old. a good example is at Braewick cafe, where you can sit and enjoy the scenery and our lovely summer weather.. instead we have to make do with sitting on a stone or the ground, and at my age, if i sit on the ground, then i can hardly get up again. lol.. lets hope someone from the tourist board reads these rants, and do something about it..

I agree that we need to improve the experience/facilities for folk.
If we were able to build a nature hide in Northmavine, where would folk recommend we built it?

One suggestion.. the south-east shore of the West loch, with the camera flap opening on to the loch, birders then could watch the Red-throated Divers, they nest every year there.. Eshaness, i would rule that out as in strong gales, it would'nt last a minute..
The south shore of Mavis grind, on the Atlantic side, always good for seals, otters, and birds, but its on the wrong side for Northmavine..
The Houb, the south shore near Sullom.. good for otters and waders..
Outwith Northmavine.. Pool of Virky, Scatness Spiggi Loch and Sandgarth near the saltmarsh..
Suitably sited benches on the trail-walks
