Hi Mal, The procession starts outside the Hillswick Hall. Usually the guizers assemble at 7.30pm for lighting up their torches at 8pm. The procession heads out from the hall along the road, past Swarthoull heading towards the loch at Urafirth where the galley is burned. A good place to park might be at Swarthoull - an ex-shop, now a holiday house - There's an area to park in front of the house. Or lots of cars usually park along the voe side of the road in that area. The police put cones along the road, nearest to the burning site. The procession goes off the road and they walk down to the loch where the galley is burned on the loch. One of the few burnings on water in Shetland I believe! People tend to follow the procession down to the burning site - but keeping a safe distance! Or some might just stay in or near their cars. You might need to go quite early if you want to get a good spot - perhaps 7pm or so? <take a Thermos!> Anyone else got any suggestions/corrections?! www.heard.shetland.co.uk/Uphellyaa/Page%209.htmwww.northmavine.com/events.htm

The Northmavine Up Helly Aa is on Friday 20th February and begins with a torch light procession and burning of the galley. The procession will light up at 8pm and the leave the Hillswick hall. Halls open this year are: North Roe, Ollaberry and Hillswick and tickets will be available in local shops nearer the time. The hop on Saturday 21st February will be held in the Sullom hall this year and starts at 9pm. Music will be provided by The Vinyls. The Guizers return will be at the North Roe & Lochend hall on Saturday 28th February at 8.30pm and squads are encouraged to come along to do their acts again. This years' Jarl is Ivan Goodlad from North Roe and we wish him all the best for a fantastic weekend.

There seems to have been a lack of continuity from Visit Shetland in advertising what's on in Northmavine. I did contact them during the summer and a member of staff assured me that VS would check the what's on section of the Northmavine website and add the events to the VS website. I suppose there has probably been a number of staff changes since then and this is obviously no longer happening. Glad Mal is going to solve the problem

I've found Visit Shetland poor in the past in terms of communication. This was during a time when they were short-staffed I think, so hopefully it's better now. I contacted them a few times regarding visitor info for an NCDC project, but gave up. Hopefully they were better with visitor enquiries! You get a very swift response from the guys who made the excellent Visit Shetland site - NB Communication. I sent a jokey email to them a while back as the Visit Shetland online shop proclaimed they were the 'Most Northerly Online Shop in the UK". I challenged that <but also said that I wasn't sure whether position mattered in cyberspace > and got a very nice reply back. They changed it to 'Buy online from the UK's most northerly islands' within minutes! I did consider just emailing them about the Northmavine UHA but thought that since Mal worked for Visit Shetland, he might be just the man to fix it! Thanks Mal!

Thanks for that.
VS website states that folk should contact local shops for tickets for UHA........perhaps it would be better to say "on sale in local shops from early February". I think local shops would rather folk just came along and bought one, rather than being phoned etc.
It also says that folk should contact local shops for hop and guizers return tickets, but as far as I'm aware (and I'll double check), the hop is pay at the door and the guizers return tickets are usually available from the UHA committee or on the door if there's tickets left (but again, I'll check)

I've just realised that this thread was previously in the website section so I've moved it into the Northmavine stuff. I was at the Hillswick hall last night for the Nort UHA, but unfortunately I'd just come back from a training course in Edinburgh and had to rush straight from the airport to Hillswick. This meant I didn't have a camera with me so no pics If anyone did manage to capture a few piccies, it would be great to see them here. I also remember that the UHA committee agreed that we could post the bill on the website, so I'll try and get a copy and get it added to the website. Although I left the hall just before midnight, the squads I saw were excellent and most were very topical!! ;D Wel done to everyone involved. Hope to see you all at Sullom hall for the hop tonight - 9pm......pay at the door - music by The Vinyls
