Last night (Tuesday 29th) seemed to be a particularly bad night in Cunningsburgh with clouds of midges wanting to attack me every time I wanted to do a spot of gardening. I sprayed myself with the required stuff but they must have ended licking the stuff off me and I had to retreat indoors 3 times before giving up. What do others here use to combat the blighters?

Those soothend midgies sound brawly tough daveh Although I haven't tried it myself, I've heard a lot of people recommend Avon's "Skin so soft".

I got the Avon stuff last year although I don't think we used it very much. I used it a few days ago when the little blighters were awful but perhaps I used too much.. The kamikaze midgies headed straight for me legs. And came to a sticky end there. Wiped them all off and beat a hasty retreat indoors! The Avon stuff, Skin So Soft, isn't or at least wasn't, sold as a midgie repellent. It's 'replenishing dry oil body spray' - Soft & Fresh. I think folk just happened to find it was good against midgies, although for me, the jury's still out! I didn't get bitten but there again, I ended up with lots of little bodies all over me.. Google 'avon skin so soft midgies' and you'll probably be able to read about it. Other option I've seen used here is the head net. <bit like a beekeeper>

Thanks, Folks. I'll try to get the Skin So Soft but I haven't noticed any Avon ladies ding-donging around these parts of late. The head net certainly is favourite with me - I'll check it out on ebay.

Thanks, Fiona. I have ordered some from ebay and is should be on the way to me soon.
Malcolm - I totally agree about the bluebottles. What are they feeding on? They swarm around the outside of the house but don't seem to settle on anything edible. Is there a way to get rid of them?

A friend has suggested electronic pest repellents, the type that send signals around the house wiring system.

Lucky for you mal I douced myself in Skin so Soft last Sunday at the launch of the wigwams and northmavine guide book at Braewick, but I was still eaten alive
