I'm just back fae the Sound Hall in Lerwick where Teddy Thompson was playing an accoustic set. Teddy is the son of Richard and Linda Thompson - folky folk. His music is very difficult to categorise but his latest album is covers of superb country songs and the album before was very "ecclectic" - to coin a much used phrase. I've been listening to his second album for a few months noo and couldn't quite decide if I was really into it or not, but I was blown away by his stage appearance tonight. His voice is suberb and he had me spellbound at times. www.teddythompson.com/I was totally blown away by his support act. Fair Isle resident-Shetland Life editor-Singer/Songwriter Mallachy Tallack sang an played his heart oot. The set from Mallachy was also accoustic and he was accompanied by Steven Laurenson, who also put in a tremendous performance. I'd only ever heard snippets of Mallachy until tonight and again I couldn't quite decide what I thought, but the performance tonight was worthy of any stage. www.malachytallack.com/It was interesting to note that although Teddy and Mallachy are both fairly well known locally, the gig wasn't a sell out and it did get me thinking about the financial viability of the new Mareel cinema and music venue...., but that's a whole new thread and can of worms!!

Sounds like a good gig! I've heard Malachy play couple of times on Fair Isle and do really enjoy his music.
Which made me think - If you're ever thinking of going to Fair Isle a great time are those summer Thursdays when the 'Fair Isle Thursdays' are on (check from the Bird Obs, once a forthnight usually) - they have someone doing a slide show & talk of a topic (like island history, nature or weather), and music - usually by Fridarey and Malachy. Great nights! Like I said, I really enjoy Malachy's music, and really really like Fridarey, a family group singing with a guitar & an accordion (if that's what you call it...). Some times Lise Sinclair also sings her own songs, lovely, she has a beautiful voice & lovely songs
