Fiona - How did you happen to move to Shetland? Somehow I thought you grew up there. I know I may be being too curious, but I am always fascinated by other's stories. Hi hampdenquilts. Came here in Jan 1981 for a job, arrived in night-blackness through sleet and ice to a power cut in Hillswick. Greeted by friendly faces, open fires and hot food. Fell asleep first night with the glow of the peat fire in the room.

SAETER RUIN.. Saeter ruin nestle's at the bottom of Enisfirth hill.. I was told a wee story about how they got their peat's gathered.. Their were three sister's and i think one brother lived there.. to get their peat's they had to haul a cart up the hill.. at a part o the track there was a big boulder, which obstructed the cart, so what they had to do to make progress up the hill, they had to remove one o the wheels, once the got past the boulder, they had to put the wheel back on, then carry on up the hill, when they could go no further, they left the cart and climbed up ower the brow o the hill to get their peat's... they then had to lower the peat's by rope down to the cart to load it up.. phew.. sound's like very hard work.. One of the sister's died, so they abandoned SAETER and moved ower gunnister voe to the other side, where they built their new house.. All this was told to me by a local man a few week's ago.. he had lived there all of his life.... Hope you find this wee story o saeter ruin of interest.. George.. below is the... The Saeter Ruin ...

Fiona. That sounds like a wonderful welcome. The beauty of Shetland seems only exceeded by the quality of the people who live there

It's certainly an art building those walls, good to see that these type of buildings are not left to go to rack and ruin.

The dry weather has not helped the roof 'tiles', the grass looks dead. What dry weather? ;D We've been drenched every day for a week now! Seriously though, what a lovely construction it is. I love it - the stone is wonderful. I tell you what, I'll send some rain up for you to water the roof!!! ;D

I laughed out loud when I read the second grave marker. Poor Donald...and poor Lawrence Tulloch ( a realative of mine, perhaps?), forever remembered as a bad pharmacist!
Beautiful pictures and stories. I love the stone houses. I have built and repaired my stone walls and know what backbreaking labor it can be. Now I know where my love of stone comes from!
