Absolutely fascinating, Allen! You're a mine of information! <spot the unintential pun ;D> Yep, read about the crater in the Shetland Museum - quite amazing. Sorry mods, not meaning to go way off topic. The reason I was asking about the origins of 'oily muggie' here and whether it was an insult or not < > was that it's on my list of possible names for me peerie shop. Anyone shed any light? TIA <oops, thanks in advance> Fi

I don't think that the Shetland Area Nicknames are meant to be complimentary (having said that, as a sheep thief I'd rather be caaed that than an oily muggie ).

How about the Craft Doctor? Like the Luuuuve Doctor - cool and groovy Surgery Crafts? Dr Cope's Craft Surgery (go on I dare you). I can still remember how it smelt as a bairn - the cold waiting room - the silent terror at impending innoculations... Them were't days ;D Good luck with the venture Fiona - will make a mental note to shop with you first before heading for the weisdale mill or Lerook.

Great stuff, thanks folks, all being considered!
Mr Gluss - Dr Cope's Craft Surgery ;D ;D Interesting to hear your reminis, reminisc, memories! When first viewing the house, it was introduced to us as 'the surgery' and it still had all the separate rooms, loo, etc. It's been 'the surgery' for us ever since and I forget how it must sound to someone new.. Surgery? You have a surgery?! Ye-es.. <blows on hands to warm them> Just follow me through to the surgery and we'll soon have you sorted out.. <wicked cackle>

I notice that the delicious young beef from Northmavine is back on sale in the Brae Garage again. Although I don't work there anymore, I still like to take an interest as a customer

Cool I only found this thread now <notice to self - read also other sections than general!> Congratulations Fiona, sounds like a very interesting (ad)venture! Look forward to hear how you get on - and coming the visit the craft & surgery co-op Some very interesting names suggestions What does the 'co-ope' mean? (as a co-op?) Cos that made me think, did you say you've done some teaching? 'Ope' in Finnish is a nickname for a teacher ('opettaja')

Hi Emmantro, yes please do come and visit. We're waiting for planning permission so we're not likely to be open until later in the summer - possibly July but I'll publicise it nearer the time. Sorry I didn't add a conclusion re the shop name - forgot! It'll probably be Oily Muggie. I'm busy sorting out the website at the moment and that should be going before the shop. That'll be purely Shetland stuff whereas the shop will have a few other bits'n'pieces too. Allen's 'Hillswick Co-ope' is a play on my surname <Cope> and the Co-op in Lerwick, plus a lot of folk here also pronounce the Co-op as cope. Interesting about the Finnish meaning of 'Ope'. Cope in the UK is generally an English name. I married an Englishman! <although he's lived most of his life in Scotland and sounds Scots>
