T&C's for "Northmavine produce, arts and crafts"
This thread is for food products, arts, crafts etc made or produced in the Northmavine area. It is hoped this thread will help showcase local produce from Northmavine. Home baking, home grown vegetables, pork, beef, chickens etc as well as Arts and Crafts such as jewellery, knitwear, photographs, paintings, pottery etc
Unfortunately we are unable to display web links and telephone numbers on the forum, but Northmavine producers are welcome to list their businesses in the business directory on the website.
All forum members are most welcome to promote their wares on the forum, and products made out with Northmavine can be displayed on the “Produce, Arts & Crafts by members” thread. All members are welcome to display photographs of their products in the relevant thread (no larger than 195 kb - 640x480 please).
If you’d like to contact a producer regarding their products, please reply through the forum or pm them.

Craft shop - HillswickAre you producing arts & crafts in Northmavine? I'm going to open a craft shop in Hillswick around May-June time. It will be from the former surgery which is attached to the side of our house. I'd like to provide an outlet for local arts & crafts - from the whole of Shetland but especially Northmavine. I'll also supplement them with some carefully chosen crafts and gifts from outwith Shetland. If you're interested, either pm me or email fiona.cope@gmail.com or phone 503363 for a chat. If you know of anyone else who doesn't read the forum but might be interested, please let them know, thanks! Oh, if you have any bright ideas for a name for the shop, feel free to post them here! I've got some ideas but will have to decide soon!

^^ Both interesting, thanks! St Magnus Bay Crafts was one that was on our brainstorming list, but hadn't thought of the 'trading post' bit. Reminds me of that newish shop near the Queens called Lodberrie Traders. Gawd, it's like givin' birth, innit! ;D

Some good ideas there! I must say I prefer Hillswick Crafts - it does what it says on the tin and I'm sure the marketing buffs would tell you that your business should always be identifiable by the name. Good luck with your new venture Fi. It's great to see someone taking a chance.

Thanks very much for the good wishes. Yes, I am taking a chance on it, especially since I'm not getting any startup grants <what with it being retail> and giving it a go. If it doesn't work, at least I've given it a go. It's perhaps pulling a few interests together - always been interested in small businesses <grew up with my Dad's bakery business and served while still at primary school>, have worked in the <then> largest dept store in Dundee <from muckle now to peerie mootie! > plus recent retail experience; very nearly went to art college <but then thought teaching was perhaps more worthy so did that instead > so artistic leanings; plus showed masochistic tendencies by going back to college in my 40s to do a year's HNC ecommerce. I found out on the first day that not only was the only female on the course, I was also the oldest.. If you're older and thinking about trying something new - go for it! I stuck in there and out of the 14 or so students, I was one of only 3 who got to the end and passed, so if I can do it, so can you! Thanks for the names suggestions. I'm torn between the basic does-what-it-says-on-the-tin type names and perhaps some more artistic ones. But, like naming a baby, whatever you choose you usually get used to anyway! Like the Hillswick Co-ope one, Allen. ;D Reminds me of when I married and the children had to get used to Mrs Cope instead of Miss Black and, what with the Shetland pronunciation of Co-op, the kids found it quite funny!

LOL, MG & Laura! ;D Still looking at various names.. A friend and I were poring over the Shetland Dictionary the other day and she commented on how 'oily muggie' was a "nickname for a native of Northmavine." We then looked up 'muggie' and it's the stomach of a fish! Does anyone know anything about the background to this? Is it to do with all the fish-gutting that went on in the past? I remember seeing photos of vast numbers of barrels of fish on the beach at Hillswick plus I believe it went on in other areas of Northmavine too. Is it meant as an insult or a friendly term?! I think I've vaguely heard it before but not sure in what context. Is it a term that's never used now? Any info greatly appreciated, thanks.
