This site will show you whereabouts in the UK most people with your surname live. I found that my surname was concentrated in the north of Scotland and the islands. Doesn't have to be just your name, you can check any name you like www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Surnames.aspx

Wow, that's fascinating, Heimdal. Funny seeing how my maiden name <I'm Scottish> is prevalent in Scotland <including Shetland>, and hubby's <he's English> is definitely rooted in England. Also how his was pretty concentrated in 1881 then looking at 1998 how much it's spread.

As dad had said when we were younger that we came from Shetland I thought I would look it up on that guide and Yes the Thomson name does show up rather well ;D

That's really interesting Heimdal! My family mostly come from the Scottish borders and a bit further north. What an excellent site you've found there. In 1881 we are very concentrated on the borders but by 1998 we are moving north into the rest of Scotland too!

Splendid site heimdal. Interestingly enough both my married name and my maiden name are both concentrated in the same areas............possibly helps to explain why I'm related to my husband then! ;D ;D ;D We're only 6th or 7th cousins honest!

I've looked at this site a bit more and you can click on to additional info to find out what the majority of your family namesake were "doing" in the 1880s - mine came up with hill farmers - so my passion for sheep was in my GENES!!!!! Also other stuff about your family name in Aussie and NZ. A really interesting site. Especially when you find a surname like for example - Pengelly ( I just selected this at random). In 1880s they all lived in the SW peninsula - which you would expect. it all changes as the years go by and people became more mobile. What a good find!

From there though you need to go to the Mosaic site to find out what the categories are. Your mosaic is "sharing a staircase".

I was very surprised to find out that my husband's (who is Canadian born ) surname is originally Welsh and the main population of his name comes from the exact same area where I was born (Porthcawl, Wales) He had no idea his name originated from there. Thought it would have been more English. A VERY INTERESTING SITE.....
