I heard about this site the other day on the radio. It is the official government source for original genealogical information. There's surely almost 50 million records www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Went on this site a few days ago because it was one of the adverts at the top of the Northmavine Forum. I think you need a good few hours to look at it though. It's not a quick "in and out" job! I was looking for my roots which I know where in the Langholm area of Scotland. You have to pay if you want more details, it seemed. But I will go back and have a go another day. There is a similar site for England and I was able to trace many family members on one of the census returns. It was funny seeing my grandpa's name - aged 4 living with all his brothers and sisters whom I never knew!!
Warning: It's very addictive once you start!!!!

Yes, this site is very addictive!! I'd done a little bit of searching some years back but have recently spent some very interesting hours over a couple of evenings researching my family. Absolutely fascinating and I've been able to pass on information to my family, fill in some blanks and confirm some suspicions. The first night I was so engrossed that I yawned and realised it was 2.30am.. You can buy credits online to view details and certificates, etc in blocks of 30 credits for £6. It's 5 credits to view a certificate, which you can then print off.
