I took this one in Gran Canaria, first time I had seen anything like it, at first I thought the 'duty free' had something to do with it ;D

Lovely heimdal. I'm going to start looking up this year, rather than down at my feet!!! I've never seen anything like that. But it's probably because I've not looked. I suppose (only from looking at the site I mentioned in the previous posting) that it could be a multiple bow........................ or, as you hint, the after effects of too much sangria!!! ;D

I think I could use some of hengit's foto-right spray.....or failing that perhaps someone could tell me where I've gone wrong with the photo below. I wanted to take a photo of the moonlight without the flash, so I thought I had to increase the ISO? The resulting photo is very "noisy"......i used several ISO settings and this aboot the best I got. The setting for this photo was as follows Nikon D80 2007/02/04 21:06:14 JPEG (8-bit) Fine Image Size: 2576 x 3793 Color Lens: 18-70mm F/3.5-4.5 G Focal Length: 70mm Digital Vari-Program: Night Landscape Metering Mode: Multi-Pattern 1/2 sec - F/4.5 Exposure Comp.: 0 EV Where have I gone wrong please?

This is a kind of photo where I would ideally take a series of shots with the camera on a tripod, and vary the exposure to keep everything available to rework in Photoshop, when that's not an option then increasing the iso becomes a compromise of more noise over gettign the exposure you want.
Upping the iso will always give more noise, although depending on the camera you can go fairly high before it becomes an issue. There are speficic plugins for dealing with noise in Photoshop, I like Noise Ninja, but if you have the tripod option then keep with iso 100-400.

Thanks for dat Braeview......it was a mad scramble tak some photos before the sky clooded over and the haily shooers began.....I should have used the tripod though. I did use several iso settings but this was the best o a brawly bad lot! I was under the impression that I had to increase the iso to stop the flash from firing?.........maybe I could just have switched it aff? ;D The manual is currently being used as a coffee coaster!

I'd shoot that stuff in manual mode, so setting the shutter speed and apature by hand. Then the flash will only fire if you put it on, and you will be able to adjust the exposures depending how it looks on the LCD.
In a programme mode (night landscape) it will be exposing however it thinks is best from the meter readings it gets, and there could be big differences depending if it's reading off the moon or a dark cloud.
If you get into photoshop then with the tripod you could take one picture that is good for the ground and one that is good for the sky, and then combine the best parts of each into one shot, because the camera is limited in the range of light it can capture in one go. It's not a low limit, and for a lot of things it will be fine, but for sun and moon shots thigns get tricky.
Definately a nice scene to shoot though.... if you can keep spotting the shots then that is the hard part, the knobs and buttons will get sorted out quick enough.

It's really helpful to get some first hand knowledge on this photography business.......I'll just need to be patient for da next calm night with a full moon. I was brawly far doon the queue when patience was being handed oot, so cropping and quick fix are about my limits with photoshop . I'll be happy if I can produce something of decent quality and understand a peerie bit o da techie stuff........it's great fun wanderin ootside and tryin to figure the camera out and I'm grateful for all the help I've received.

I think I could use some of hengit's foto-right spray..... There might be a bit left in his garage, but the bulk of it has been requisitioned by Minolta. A truck load is on its way to NortOwer in Edinburgh too (COD of course!) George, who has told everybody he's gone "doon sooth" has actually gone off to China for a bulk order too but promised to share it with mhay. They must have got wind of it somehow!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
