At the moment we're in the early stages of discussions with someone who would be willing to come up to Northmavine in April to hold a "build your own solar panel" workshop. Details are a bit sketchy so far, but I've found a you tube clip of a group constructing panels at a workshop last year.
Does anyone in Northmavine have any initial interest in being involved in such a project? Please pm me or phone the NDC office on 544222 or e-mail maree@northmavine.com. I'll add more details about the course to this thread as I receive them.

Here's some further detail on the workshop:
The Northmavine Development Company is organising a “Build your own Solar Panel” workshop for folk in Northmavine during the first two weeks of April. The exact date is still to be confirmed, but it will be a one day course over a weekend. The solar panel course was designed by Kerr MacGregor and he holds the patent for the solartwin system used. The course goes through the principles of solar heat generation and folk will get the chance make a basic system that can be incorporated into your own plumbing.
The course is free and folk require basic DIY skills. Panels can be completed with little other than a saw, blow torch and a screwdriver but it would help speed up the process if anyone interested in the course could help supply a couple of workmate benches, blow torches, a power-saw and power screw-drivers.
Spaces are limited to seven folk and soup and sandwiches will be provided at lunchtime. Anyone interested in more details or signing up for the course should contact the NDC office – Tele 544222 or e-mail maree@northmavine.com

Just an update on the solar panel workshop. The April date became a May date which then had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour. This was very disappointing for both the NCDC and those who had expressed an interest in the course. Given that there was so much interest and that it was such a practical course - where folk could actually each make a panel during the workshop - we have contacted further people who may be interested in coming to Northmavine to run a course. I have the details of the folk who signed up for the previous course and I will contact them as soon as we have solid details. A couple of spare places are still available so contact the office or e-mail me if you'd like to book a place. All places are free of charge. E-mail maree@northmavine.com or Tele 544222

I'm delighted to say that Kerr MacGregor is coming up to Northmavine on Sunday 7th September to do a solar panel workshop. Kerr's system works by heating water in a series of pipes.........sorry this info isn't very technical, but renewables technology isn't one of my strong points as you may have gathered!!!!!
Some of the folk who signed up for the original workshop earlier in the year cannot make it on Sunday so we have 3 spaces available. The workshop will take place in the Hillswick hall and folk will actually make a solar panel each on this full-day course. Basic DIY skills would be an advantage. For more details and to sign up for a place, please contact the NCDC office - 544222 or e-mail maree@northmavine.com.

The solar panel workshop toook place last Sunday. We've had some excellent feedback so far fae people who took part in this. There has been a lot of further interest since the course from people who were unable to attend, so we'll have to think about running it again if we can get funding. Perhaps some of those who attended on Sunday would be willing to facilitate another workshop?

well the workshop was very impressive, and i`m sure bob and i would be willing to pass on the info. you would need to get "fins" via Kerr, otherwise might be cheaper for someone to go with a van to B&Q for the rest of the materials.

I think I might cost the materials to see how much they cost. If folk like you an Bob were interested in showing folk how to construct the panels and the materials were affordable, perhaps we could try running on or two workshops in Northmavine?

fine by us Maree, can i suggest trying to get hays(or whatever its called noo) to sponsor the event? perhaps some materials, plus a voucher for purchase for further panels(i think most of us will need more than 1 panel)
we could come up with a set list of materials, instructions etc which could include their prices...cheeky i know but if you don`t ask.... or some dept of the council might have old copper pipe, wood etc for recycling
