Dear Community Groups,
We are pleased to advise you that Lews Castle College have led the development of the Scottish Curriculum for
training in Renewable Energy. Lews Castle College have recently been validated for the delivery of unique
training in Renewable Energy at HND and BSc level available from August 2008. In addition Lews Castle
College are delivering a Professional Development Award (PDA) in Renewable Energy Systems tailored to meet
the needs of local community renewable energy groups and professionals, available from January 2008.
The PDA in Renewable Energy Systems has been developed by Lews Castle College to provide knowledge and
understanding of current and future trends in energy production, sustainability and energy conservation issues,
and the role that renewable energy technologies may play in meeting energy demands and in limiting global
environmental damage.
The PDA also covers a broad knowledge of the physics and engineering of many renewable energy technologies
so that accurate valid comparisons can be made between different renewable energy technologies when solving
energy-related problems.
The PDA course starts with an 80 hour double credit unit: “Renewable Energy Systems: Overview of Energy
Use”, which is available on-line from January 2008, so it is accessible from home, from work, from a learning
centre – anywhere! Then follows a choice of specialist optional units that follow, which include: Biomass, Geothermal
Energy, Hydroelectricity, Hydrogen, Micro-generation, Solar, Wave and Tidal Power, Wind Power.
Lews Castle College have secured over £0.5M in capital funding, including substantial support form from
HICEC, for the establishment of world class Hybrid Renewable Energy & Hydrogen Technology training and
R&D facilities. So, for some of the more hands-on units, there is the opportunity to take advantage of practical
training with these integrated facilities.
The fee for each unit is £82 (£164 for the first double credit unit). Financial support for students may include
access to ILAs, HICEC sponsorship, or talk to us about ways in which we can help with the cost of the
programme.
We believe the PDA course may be of particular interest to your department. The course contact is Catherine
Donald on 01851 770202, or email catherine.donald@lews.uhi.ac.uk for more information.
Kind regards,
Robin Goodhand
