I have an empty chicken run which is ideal for growing vegetables - it is well-manured from the chickens and I have added a bit of soil conditioner - loamy stuff I have hoed it and raked it this morning. It is completely chicken proof as well. ;D I was thinking of growing some early tatties in it and some other veg. I've never really grown any veg before - except radishes, lettuce and tomatoes in my little cold frame so this will be a first. Any suggestions and ideas for getting the best out of my little plot would be welcomed! Here it is ready to go. All I need now is some inspiration!

Yep! You are right george. It's Mr Turkey, lurking in the background, trying to look impressive for the camera. Anyway, I've bought a few things for my little patch of garden - some tatties and some spring cabbage and a few seeds.

Hey BM, looks great! I'm getting to the same stage, we've got some seeds in pots now and got from our allotment neighbours leeks that have been growing over winter! So looking forward to summer. Are you going to grow any herbs? While it's easy enough nowadays to buy a pot a fresh basil it's much nicer to grow your own (well, I assume so, first year now that we have the alloment...)
Ah I'd love to get chicken too...! Have you had them for long? How many? For me it'll still be a dream for a while longer, don't think they'd enjoy our tiny concrete yard..

I have got some herbs in my chicken run - parsley, mint, thyme and some sage. I may try growing basil this year now I have bought a little polytunnel which fits beautifully inside the run. At the moment I have got some tiny pea plants in it but am still looking for inspiration! you are lucky to have an allotment - I heard the other day that there is a twelve year waiting list in some parts of London which is so sad when people want to grow their own. I have about 30 chickens of different breeds which a free-range all the time and six ex-battery hens which have no feathers at the moment and look terrible. Fiona has got the same type as my batteries - except hers are lucky they all have their feathers and have a nice little hen house and they free-range!!! Take a look at the crofting section and you will see some photos of chickens there!

Looking great!
I love allotment gardening - we've got from different friendly neighbours rasberries and small leek, spinach and raddish plants!
Now I'm just doing long-distance allotmentering, telephone instructions & getting photos on email! ;D

I'm thinking about trying to grow potatoes this year, when is the best time to plant them. Any tips would be appreciated. Also, can lettuce be grown in hanging baskets [trying to avoid the slugs]?

When to plant potatoes will depend on the variety being planted. I have only ever grown 'Golden Wonders', a late maturing variety ( I think they were planted late March). Self-grown tatties with your Christmas dinner is just great ! I used to grow lettuce in a length of plastic guttering supported on bricks above ground level ( to foil the slugs), not a lot of soil there so needs to be carefully watched in case it dries out. Don't plant the seeds all on the same day, wait a few days between or they will all be ready together and you can only eat so many lettuce at the same time. A mini greenhouse made from polythene sheeting will help a lot, especially if you know any visiting woodworkers ;D ;D ;D
