I have just returned from a 16 day stay in Northmavine and i know ive been a few times but i still can not get my head around wether the shops / pub's / hotels / cafe's are open or not, down here its quite simple a sign says Open or Closed, i know the locals might know whats open and when but the poor old tourist is left wondering whether to try the door or not just a thought anyway i had a great time and hope to be back in November ;D

Hi Fred,
I heard complaints last year from individuals who ran bed and breakfast establishments in the North Mainland that they never knew when places were open for evening meals. I know it is difficult to get staff but for tourists opening times should stay the same throughout the season

Obvious open or closed signs would be a big help, some places have theip opening hours outside the premises, but not all. Take note the tourism group.

Yep, very good points, snowy! Thanks to Fred for the tourist-eye view of things - valuable feedback! It's the only way to improve things. Sometimes it's the obvious things that can be forgotten about. Shetland used to be a bit lacking in the signpost department, but things have improved a bit now.
