Reading through some pages on Shetlopedia, I came across a jpg sent in by 'islandhopper', showing Hanseatic trading posts in Shetland. Interestingly, it shows one in Hillswick( called by the merchants "St Magnus Haven") operated by merchants named Adolph Westermann and John Otto Bossau. Would this be the origins of 'The Booth' ? Please excuse if this is already well known locally, I usually turn right to Eshaness at the junction I live in Lerwick

Hi Heimdal. Yes, you are correct. Rather than me give you a not-very-good account of the history of the Booth in Hillswick <formerly Shetland's oldest pub!>, hopefully someone else may, or even better, Jan or Pete might pop in and tell you about it. Whaddya mean you turn right at Eshaness and don't come in to Hillswick...??! How dare you. How very dare you. ;D

I was hoping that someone from the Booth would drop by but here's something to be getting on with. www.nature-shetland.co.uk/others/hillswick.htmI can't vouch for the accuracy. Having a v. quick glance I did spot one mistake on the family info part of it.

Hello Heimdal,
Fiona's badgered me to join and answer your queries. Yes, your right. The history of The Booth (Da Bod) is recorded (so far) back to 1668 when then owner Adolf Westermann from Hamburg is documented as opening a kist, witnessed by local minister Hercule Sinclair - the same Sinclair who burned down the Eshaness Kirk due the pagan practices of the locals. In 1698 Westermann sold or passed on the establishment to Otto Bassau who passed it on to the Giffords of Busta in 1712.
Hope this helps satisfy your curiosity.

Badgered?! Moi?! Oui, j'en suit sur ( excuse, accents don't work) and besides, it's been a long time since I tried to write in French. Thanks for the info, and apologies for the delay in replying, but I have been 'off the island' for the last few weeks, and will be again shortly. As to the 'turning right at the junction', I have been parking up chez Magnus and Christina regularly over the summer, great place, great facilities for campers, and have been recommending the site to all the other caravanners/campervanners I have met whilst away, especially ( I was going to say 'even') to the ones who don't have a clue where Shetland is.

Good fer you - it's good facilities and brill view. Camper vans - I'm jealous. It's a standing joke in our family that every time we pass one I go - <sad, pathetic voice> ooh... a camper van.... - hoping that someone will take me up on it... It would be great to have Magnus & Christina posting here occasionally but I'm guessing they're pretty busy..
