My trip to Fethaland.. I was inspired to go there after reading a story from another member from eshaness [you know who i mean] lol .. So i started out yesterday, talk about hilly, these hills were steeper than mountains. When i got to the top o the first hill [ after numerous rests ] i saw a sign, being a nosy bugger i thought i would read it.. here it is.. Then it was on and up.. whew hard work, eventually reached the top, and collapsed in a heap.. then it was downward then up AGAIN then downward then UP AGAIN.. Eventually reached my destination.. It was beautiful.. Then it was down the last slope.. Then i reached the information board.. The sea was so clear.. Then it was exploring time in and out of the auld ruins, you can still see the auld noosts, where they dragged the boats oot the water.. I used to have a noost for my boat in mossbank.. Through the window.. The rock strewn beach.. On the sheltered side o the beach.. Then the part which i was dreading.. going back.. just wish i owned a helecopter.. No mobile signal in this part o north roe.. so hope your all fit.. no way to get emergency services.. Footnote.. i found that going down the steep hills was more difficult than climbing upwards.. and watch oot for holy willies.. i met one when there. needless to say, he wis wasting his time.. lol .. PS.. it took me almost 7 hours, started climbing at 01pm returned home at 0745pm. only to be told that the killer whales were in firth voe for two hours.. but i did spot them off linga isle at 0800pm..

Hope you have recovered from your walk to Fethaland George I looked into visiting there on both my holidays in/on Shetland but decided it was beyond my capabilities, and there not being any mobile coverage up there makes it even more risky so am full of admiration on your trek. Did I read somewhere or other there is a sort of hired transport available up there, some guy with a 4 wheel drive who would take you, it is the only way I would ever get there, the cost might be a wee bit prohibitive though for a single passenger.

Hi. All.. Yesterday I had to get out, two days in, is not good for anyone.. So, where to go.. Eshaness sounds good to me, on a lovely day like yesterday.. So I set off.. But first, I had to check Yell sound for whales.. [ nothing seen ] As I past Garths voe, I saw a Heron feeding and a few Mergansers.. Next stop was at Brae, stocked up with provisions at the coop, then it was onward.. Next stop was Punds water, I stopped at the parking spot, and took my old camera, and left the car.. Then I took a few photos of the Loch.. the reason I used my old camera was, it means I don't have to change lenses.. The Loch.. Then I spotted what I thought might be an interesting photo, it was just the long grass at the side of the Loch.. Then it was onward.. Next stop was at the Twart Burn, there was a flock of Twites here, but they told me not to take their photo, strange we birds, I did'nt realise they could speak ;D The Burn.. Then it was time to get going, just before Zoar, another flock of Twites were all lined up on the fence.. I stopped, got out the car and your've guessed right, they all flew off, but I did get some photos of some wild-plants.. Sheeps Bit and Cats Ear.. Cats ear.. Then it was time for a bite to eat, so I stopped at Braewick cafe, and had a wee blether with Christina, finished eating and headed to the Lighthouse.. But first stopped at Breckon water, [ also called the Loch o the Gaet ] Brecken Water.. Then I saw another large flock of Twites, at least 20 of them.. Then one of my sons drove up to me, he was going to Framgord Loch, at the lighthouse, we had a wee blether, then he had to go, this fishing bug is hard to beat.. Then it was back home again.. lots of photos to sort out, then to select the ones for this wee Blog.. Hope you enjoyed my day out.. I did .. george..

Thanks Aitch for commenting, it really is deserted on this forum, Maree is going to revamp it with a little help.. I had a word with her about the forum, being so quiet, there is about 190 members, but very few post on here, why, I don't know.. even some of the mods seem to have disappeared.. Well do I still do fishing.. Not as often as I would like Aitch.. I was watching two white sided dolphins feeding in weisdale voe this afternoon, a lot of fish were coming to the surface, I think they were sea-trout.. I watched them for three hours and took 185 photos, it'll take ages to sort them out.. This is two of the pictures.. This second picture was back-lighted, thats why it looks differant from the first one.. I'll go know and thanks again for your interest.. regards george..

Hi George, with so many wonderful opportunities for photography at your disposal it is little wonder that you find it difficult to find time for fishing, I too would like the chance to get out and about the same as you in/on Shetland. In the last month or so I have packed up fishing, for many reasons, not least the sheer physical effort required to get the vast amount amount of tackle we coarse anglers carry to and from the bank side. Also there is currently an effort by fishery owners to wean us on to more expensive baits imported from Japan at the expense of being able to fish with baits you can buy cheaply from the local supermarkets. They say, and who am I to argue, that the imported baits are more fish freindly than Luncheon meat etc, and when all is said and done the fisheries belong to them and they have every right to dictate what you can fish with and what can't, but the result is a lot of confusion and uncertainty. Having said all that the fact is that I had stopped enjoying it, in a way it got too easy to catch big weights of fish in the overstocked fisheries. So what do I do next, over the past few weeks I have revamped my garage to a hobbies room, it is double glazed, heated and also have an old carpet fitted in there so it quite cosy. I have taken steps to revive some old interests, namely scale modelling, painting ie, water colours and acrylics. I have set up a tropical fish tank in there also and the first fish were added this week. One more activity in there will be to copy all my old VHS tapes to DVD, I have over the past couple of days set up a TV and VHS to DVD recording device. My wife Rita, asked me when I am taking my bed in there. The lack of interest in the Forum? h'mm difficult that one, if it was not for you George I believe it would have died some time ago. You put up some fabulous pictures on various parts of the forum but the very few comments you recieve must make you wonder if it is worth it, from a purely selfish point of I hope you do not lose interest because I look forward to them appearing on this forum. So keeping taking those superb pictures George and perhaps one day the forum will take on a revival and your effort will recieve the comments they deserve. All the best mate.

Thats a pity Aitch that you had to pack in the fishing, I do know what course fishing entails, trout fishing is more lightweight, all i take is my fly rod and net, i do wear my fishing jacket, that carrys all the flys etc..
Aye, photography takes up most of my time, but I enjoy it so much, also it gets me out of the house, the house is so quiet since Jean died..
The forum, well what can i say about it, its better for me to say nothing about it, hopefully Maree can sort things out, and I wish her well with it.. Thats one of the main reasons I started another forum, at the moment its far simpler to add photos and posts.. than here.. but I will stay about here as well.. I tend to share my new forum with facebook and on here, with a hyper link, which takes you straight into my forum..
Yes. lack of comments does bother me, esp. when you go to lengths to show other people who cant get out and about like me, to show what it is like out there..
regards george..

I run out of glossy 10x15cm paper for my photos.. So ordered more from Amazon, well it was one of Amazons suppliers.. I ordered them on the 1st. sept. they told me it was despatched on the 3rd sept.. and should get them by the 6th.sept.. Its now the 12th sept. An email from them said.. It might be lost in transit.. I told them to replace it if I don't recieve it on monday, the 13th sept.. In the meantime, i thought i'd try the toon.. What a let down that was... I tried every photography shop in Lerwick.. out of luck ..sixty miles round trip for nothing.. And I really wanted to print out more photos for my album.. Like these.. Then my grandaughter popped in for a chat.. She wanted a couple of photos A4 size.. Then my son popped in.. he wanted a couple also, so he picked the ones he wanted, sunsets.. a good choice.. so I printed them out.. So i'll have to wait to see if my 10x15cm come on monday.. george..

All that was missing was BUDDIE!! LOL! I can remember when we both went down to see the red kite that Buddie was SUCH a good boy in the back of my car!

Hi George.
I bought photo paper from the camera shop, I know they can be a tad expensive but they have a BOGOF offer on Kodak photo paper. If you are looking for some 6x4 I could let you have a pack free (I got it free from a group I belong to).

Thanks very much Mal.. but I got a pack of 100 sheets on monday.. I think the delay may have been caused by them being posted from Jersey..
But its odd that a local camera centre has'nt got any kodak 10x15cm sheets, thank god for the internet..

This time it just flew up and down the canal and I was able to watch in for a good five minutes. It is often seen there. wonderful little bird! Had my binoculars with me so watched it as it sat on the metal bit of the far bank. Glad you've put a Buddie adventure on your website! I'll have a look when I get home tonight. ;D
