Hello all, whilst perusing the Shetland Times headlines there was an article referring to this subject listed. It appears that boats are used to clear marine litter from the seas and beaches, where do boats come into play for clearing the beaches. I seem to remember Maree posting some time ago about getting children involved in clearing the beaches in Northmavine, are all these activities under the general heading of "Fishing for litter"

I think the fishing for litter initiative is designed to promote the responsible disposal of litter by fishing boats and it also actively encourages fishermen to bring ashore any litter they dredge up in their nets. The thinking behind this is that if boats can be encouraged to bring litter ashore, rather than chucking it over the side - as occassionally happens! - the beaches will have less marine litter on them. The beach cleaning initiative the bairns were involved in is "Da Voar Redd Up". This is an annual event organised by the Shetland Amenity Trust which encourages groups and individuals to clear up the litter from beaches and roadside verges. It's a really successful event and is now in it's 21st year I think
