YAY Tickets for events are going on sale soon!!! I am really interested in the lectures on textiles and crofting life. We Quilters are having some events, too. Looking forward to meeting them all. And the Taste of Shetland!!! have been looking at the videos of the music I took last trip. Can't wait for my boys to experience it all "live". I already have a LONG list for the Oily Muggie - just loving the Fair Isle Bunnies. We think they are made by relatives.

Yes HQ, tickets for some of the larger events are now available - only 92 days to go!! I suppose you're already aware of the hamefarin website, but I've put the link here for anyone who isn't. www.shetlandhamefarin.com/I know the family history group in Lerwick are keen to hear from anyone who intends coming to Shetland for the Hamefarin and will be searching for relatives. If folk get in touch with the history group now, perhaps there's a better chance of the group being able to help with some research into relatives and have a more expansive amount of information available when folk arrive here in Shetland. Here's a link to their website: www.shetland-fhs.org.uk/If any Hamefarers are looking for relatives here in Northmavine, please let us know on the forum and maybe we can help

:)Hello, I am looking for relatives that live in that area, and I have posted some questions on other forums that you have, but from the dates it looks like they may not be currently active...I dont know, but I would love to connect with someone who would be willing to answer some questions that I have, I am currently in California, so it makes it a little hard to pop in, would LOVE to visit, but....... on my last trip home to England my Aunti gave me my Grandfathers diary, and in it are names and addresses of relatives that live in Ollaberry, it would be so great to get any info on them...thanks ahead for any help someone would be willing to give..

Have any forum members signed up for the North Mainland Hamefarin tour on 17th June? If so, is there anything in particular, you'd like to see. A group of us are finalising the tour at the moment and we'd hate to miss any special requests. Please let us know by the end of May at the latest.

Hi Maree. Our group would have liked to join the tour, but I am sponsoring a Tea for Quilters at Busta House that afternoon. We will be driving up ourselves on other days. Will anything be open? I think we will be going to Oily Muggie as soon as we arrive!!

Also, we want to see Croes house, where my grandfather was born. I am pretty sure we saw it last visit, but we want to take a photo and just "be" there. It may sound silly, but I feel such a strong connection there.

Now don't you go buying everything you see in the Ness shop. You'll be paying excess baggage at this rate!!!

I have been trying to figure out how to pack and have enough room left for shopping! How many clothes do I really need.... I also had a very hard time figuring out the VAT last trip. I ended up not getting any refunds at all. So I am trying to read the rules and understand them. For some reason, numbers make my brain go blank. But if I don't have to pay the VAT, I can buy more! And it isn't that I don't want to pay the tax, but our sales tax is only 6.5%. 17% is...ouch! I just don't know how I missed all these great shops on my last trip!

Just to say thanks to all our Hamefarers who took the bus trip to the North Mainland last Thursday. Everyone seemed to have a great time and we really enjoyed our jobs as hosts. The trip was organised by local people in the area with help from Shetland Islands Council and the day involved around forty to fifty volunteers to make sure everything went smoothly. Special thanks to Ruby and Peter who did an excellent job as tour guides on the bus. The day started in Lerwick at 8.30am when almost 50 people boarded the bus for the North Mainland. The first stop was the Delting Disaster Memorial at Firth which commemorates the men lost during a fishing trip over 100 years ago. The bus traveled on and the Hamefarers were able to get a glimpse of the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal as they traveled on to Brae. Next stop was the Delting Boating Club where Douglas Irvine welcomed everyone. The peat fire was a real hit and many pictures were taken in front of da fire! Norma, Mary and Sue produced a welcome spread of tea/coffee, bannocks and home bakes, Bruce Benson came along with his photo albums and Geordie Peterson kindly told the Busta House story. Then it was back on the bus to Tangwick Haa at Eshaness! Many of the people on the tour were descendants of Northmavine folk, so Tangwick was a great opportunity for them to 'redd kin' (look for relations) in the records there. Custodians and local people were on hand with information on folks' genealogy or even take folk to their old homesteads. Just before lunchtime the group travelled up to the Eshaness Lighthouse for more photo opportunities and then it was on to the newly refurbished Ollaberry hall for lunch. Lunch was a leisurely affair to give folk a chance to catch their breath. The menu was mouthwatering and the volunteer cooks/servers at the hall deserve a huge round of thanks. After lunch the Northmavine Fiddle & Accordion Club entertained everyone with a few tunes and Nora Peterson, along with the Ollaberry Dance Group, demonstrated a few Shetland dances. Then the audience were hauled up on the floor for a dance or two! Folk really enjoyed this and fairly entered into the spirit of the occasion. There were some pretty impressive dancers amongst them! Thanks to the Fiddle & Accordion Club and Nora and her dancers for giving up their time to help make the afternoon special for folk. Organisers had invited a number of craft producers and craft shops along to Ollaberry and stalls were open to give folk a chance to see and buy some of the fantastic products being produced and sold in Northmavine. Each stall-holder had a worthwhile afternoon and we are really grateful to them for coming along. All too soon it was 4pm and time for everyone to get back on the bus and head back to Lerwick. Time was just too short and the North Mainland (especially Northmavine ) still held a huge number of delights that we just did not have enough time to show folk. We hope it's not another 25 years afore folk are back again and we look forward to giving them another great welcome. Here's a few pics:

I wish we had been able to take the bus trip! Just so many things to fit into our days. We found the women at Tangwick Hall VERY helpful! The large photo on the wall that you see when you walk in, is the Aunt Jean that we have been looking for!! I had brought some of the photos that my Mom had of aunt Jean. We really found out a lot of information! Thank you all for a wonderful time!! and Maree - we stayed at Busta House, so we really lived the story!! The ghost visited with one of us at least every day!!
