Hi, I am back with more questions on names and descendants , I was looking at the maiden name of the wife of John Barclay Jameson, and that is Mouat.....I understand that that has quite a story behind it, I have researched some but, would love to hear from anyone with a connection to that name...thanks

Hi Gilllian..........good to see you back and glad to hear that you're catching up wth your ancestors! There are lots of folk in Shetland with the surname 'Mouat'. In many instances the spelling is now 'Mowat'. I'm intrigued by your comment that the name has quite a story behind it and will ask around, or maybe Laura or Bob have further info?

Hi, yes...I Googled the name Mouat and came up with all kinds of info about the name, I just wanted to know if someone was out there with the name, or could give me more info, I have seen it in the same family spelled both ways, its interesting, what caused the name change, do you know, or is it one of those things...I have my dads last name shown a variety of ways, including his dads b-certificate, his grandmother came from Cornwall and had such an accent that the man took down my grandfathers last name "wrong", since she couldnt read, she did not know...put her x on the certificate....

Hi Gillian, I noticed that there isn't much action here. I am going to Shetland for a week on Nov 9th. I am hoping to do some real research while I am there.

Hi Gillian I've been looking back through the family history of Christina Mouat and can't find much to link her to the present day. There are lots of Mouats/Mowatts/Mowats here in Shetland, many still in Northmavine. I think you're right about the spelling of names changing. People often couldn't read or write or perhaps the writing was poor/scrawly and spelling misinterpreted. I've looked back at some old records and although writing is beautiful in many cases, it's pretty hard to decipher! I'll keep looking and asking here. I note that Christina had connections in Gluss and here in Sullom (where I live) Happy hunting and maybe hamptdenquilts can help with the jigsaw too
