Had a great walk out along the cliffs at Westerwick the day after Up Helly Aa...... somehow managed to never go there before. Was shooting timelapse as fast as I could while the sun was out, but grabbed a couple of stills.

Ah, the "grabbed the shot at the time and fixed up later" technique really ;-)
2 shots in RAW, hand held, one exposed for the stack, letting the sky blow out, and then one exposed making sure nothing went out the top end of the histogram.
Patching them together in photoshop is a bit more wok than when it's all locked down on a tripod, but not too bad. Think I "exposed" the sky raw twice, once for the sky itself and once more for the middle distance - took in 2 versions of the same raw.
Then it is just blending things in Photoshop, mostly making gradients with the quickmask. Hardest bit is usually restraining yourself to something that looks natural.
I also shot a crazy 270 degree panarama in Westerwick itself...... but that will be a lot of work to bring together. Yeah, I need to go back there a few more times too. it's only about 30 minutes walk.... but you take more like 2 hours with all the shots that are there.

I had a feeling there was some 'funny business' going on... something in the middle ground is a little deceiving... quite how, i'm not entirely sure, but something was screaming out at me.... hmmm, what is it??? The light around the isles to the right of the cliff seems to sit oddly... I don't know... but my eyes are confusing my head (and vice versa!)
This digital photography lark, what a jip! *Note peevedness, simply at the fact he's going to have to learn how to use photoshop properly along with the taking of better photos to start with!* **or i could just take in a manner avoiding photoshop... depends on stylistic wants i guess*.
So much I want to learn and get on with photography wise... but some idiot, somepoint, decided that becoming a lawyer needed to be a full time job... really, there was no need. Especially when I don't even intend on becoming a lawyer with my law degree... then the sanity of it all really does start crumbling around me! *longs for summer (spare) time!*

There is a lot of lighting variation going on.... but I think it is mostly natural rather than Photoshop.... the forground is half in shadow from the cliffs, while the middle ground is in direct sun, but hazy.... There are no edges of light from PS anyhow.... all smooth grades.... When you start in PS like this then you are "painting" the light in to some degree, so it does end up with you making it look like you remember things rather than a direct image from a single photo..... Some PS tutorial stuff here that might be of interest. www.luminous-landscape.com

It's all just pictures..... as long as you like the picture in the end it's all good ;-)
I think it's mostly about getting the image the way you want it to look, whatever else is just "technique".
For example, instead of blending 2 exposures in Photoshop you could use a neutral density grad filter on the camera, then you are adjusting the exposure of different parts of the image on camera instead of in post.
Of course, even way back in the darkroom days ( ;-) ) you had Ansel Adams working and reworking prints, dodging and burning areas to get the image he wanted, whever you do that under the enlarger, or in Photoshop.....

Ah sure, I know. It is still a supprise sometimes how much of the final image comes from PS work compared with the camera, but then again,... messing about with ND grads near Shetland cliffs is not much fun... ;-)

Ah, the dark side is my previsualisation stuff.... where 50% of the picture is not real at all... ;-)
