Noo den. Back in Shetland. Arrived Saturday afternoon on a flight from Edinburgh, which landed in Sumburgh 30 mins early. Dats right, your eyes didna deceive you bairns, 30 mins early. A braaly guid 30,000 ft southerly gale helped nae doubt. And just to prove I really am back up so soon, heres 5 or so photos i took yesterday in da gales an da rain. Had to 'Shetland christain' the camera... a necessity despite the lack of religious waverings. I started around Hamar, so we'll go we dem first. >Da rusty auld pier ting... rain, gales... lovely. >A couple o lonely bouys keepin each iddir company After dat, i pushed eshaness-wards... noticing dat the sky was clearing a peerie bit ower da Westside, joost enof ta let da light break through. I sped along hoping no ta miss it! >Taen fae joost below da Breiwick Cafe, Light Striking Westside >Sheep migrating tae da Drongs Decided tae push on trying to get to Eshaness before da light changed too much. Wanted ta get the drongs we da light, but da angle wis a wrang and i wid hiv tae hiv waalked ower da buggiest weetest bit of parks ta make it ony better. So i seetled fir wan o looking oot ower stenness, westwards. Few more doon at Stenness Beach and at Eshaness Cliffs but camera battery was going flat and i couldna get ony good eens. Shetland is very pretty... something you realise everytime you come back!

wis only going ta be twatree, but it mounted up. *thinks about changing the thread title*
I bought a Canon EOS 400D. Its canon's new Digital SLR camera. A little expensive (found it as cheap as i could over the internet) but its quite the camera. I have no idea how to use it yet, but getting to grips with it slowly!

I've got a Canon EOS 350D but will have to spend some time learning all about it properly!! <I keep saying that.. > A photography nightclass might be a good idea.. other than that - read my books and play with it more!

it was a tos up between the EOS 400D and the Sony A100. I couldn't decide and i got fed up trying to decide so i went with Canon. Only reason to get the Sony A100 was the antishake thats built into the body of the camera not in the lens. Apart from that plus side, the 400D had the Sony beat. I only had the money to get the kit lens when i bought the camera, so it doesn't have antishake in the lens... however, in the not too distant future i'm hoping to get the 18-85mm lens and the combo of body and lens will be complete.
At the end of the day, both camera's were going to be such a mark up on my previous camera (just your bog standard point/click dig cam) that it didn't really make much odds. Just had to choose one and for me, the balance fell on the side of Canon. I just have to properly learn how to use it now... i'm getting there.

Hello David.
If you do not have the 18 - 85 lense what lens setting did you use for the last two photos thay seem to be taken with a wide angle setting, or have you cropped them. I have to say they are excellent pictures, well done.

its the standard 18-55mm lens. I've had to crop. Not ideal, but a necessity. It might be a while before i can shell out the £300-400 on the 18-85mm lens. I'm only but a poor student!

it would have been good if photography was available as a subject at school, at least in the later years. it would have been really interesting. i know that the Anderson used to do it, as my dad said they turned the old dark room into their 6th year area for a while....but that was a very long time ago... i'm more of a click and hope kinda gal I think I am too! ;D I don't have the patience for faffing about that some people do! But I do want to learn more about it - some time! I did play around in the dark room for a brief spell at college <oops, that's not meant to sound like that! > but that was <thinks..> as near as dammit 30 years ago. So I've forgotten the little that I knew...

I got the camera + kit lens as well. I don't know if it's the same lens for the 400D as the 350D but it seems to be generally accepted that the kit lens isn't that great, at least when you consider the quality of the camera and what it can do. I'd like a zoomier <technical term > lens but I can't justify that until I figure out more about it..

Yeah, it'll be the same lens. 350/400D basically the same thing, the 400D just the latest in the line (i think). Just has a few more 'gizmo's'. The lens isn't great, which is why i almost got the Sony A100. But. The Canon has a bigger scope for improvement as i (hopefully) get better at the whole photography thing, with a better selection of lenses from Canon and a better Body (everything apart from the anti-shake... but thats found in the better lenses, so not really an issue). The Sony A100 would have been a quick fix and i was worried it might annoy me in the future with the lack of range for lenses. So while maybe not ideal right now, its more than good enough for me and can potentially provide a better piece of kit than the Sony. That was my thinking anyway. And as a camera manufacturer, i'd trust Canon ahead of Sony.
Looking forward to the day i get the 18-85 lens... this day will be a long time yet, and plenty to be getting on with at the moment anyway!
