Congratulations to you all for getting the shop back. Its rewarding to see the community pulling together at such an important time.
Staying in Aberdeen, we are never more than 500 yards from a Tesco or Asda. We take this for granted, the effect of not having a local shop must have proved difficult for all ages in the community.
When its opened it will be a welcome addition to the community.

Cheers Churchstreet As you keen, a peerie shop is really important in a rural area for all sorts of reasons. Not only is it the place where everyone can buy their supplies, it's also a place where folk can meet, have a yarn and get to know each other knm.......We'll be having a meeting with the steering group very soon and then we'll be putting up posters in the health centre, eshaness cafe and hillsook hall notice board to let folk know when the redd up will start. We hope anyone in the area will pop along for as much or as little time as they can spare

Whats the news on the shop? Is it nearly ready for opening? Has any of the volunteers had cameras to take progress pictures with? Would be good for us to see pictures of each stage of the way towards opening.
Come on sister maree, get that camera out!!!!!!!!!!!

The refurbishment is coming along really nicely at the shop and we hope to re-open on Thursday 26th November. We'll open the doors at 2pm for anyone who wants to have a browse and perhaps indulge in a purchase or two. This will be followed by an 'official' opening at 6.30pm. We hope everyone will come along for a look at the place and a cuppa or a glass or wine.

A big well done to everyone who worked on that project Maree, must give you all a lot of satisfaction after a lot of hard work. ::)I will not be able to make the opening but when and if I make up that way again I will drop in and have a look, I went to the old shop a couple of times when visiting that part of the world. Again a big well done to you all and all the best for the opening.

Yes! Well done indeed. Every day there are stories of these shops pubs and schools closing down. It is a terrible shame. For anyone who is interested I have linked into one of our fairly local success stories - the Raven Inn in Llanarmon-yn-Ial which closed. The residents have it up and running again now! www.raveninn.co.uk/The BBC made a documentary about it!

Hearty congratulations to all concerned with the refurbishment and reopening of the Hillswick Shop.
My great-grandfather, William Robertson, was for many years the manager of the Hillswick shop (in those days situated in da Bod) where he worked from 1870 until 1904, when he and his family left their home, Snabuil, just up the hill from the shop, to emigrate to New Zealand. He was succeeded by William Manson, who had been a boarder in the Robertson home at Snabuil and had been employed at the shop since 1888.
I was privileged to enjoy a meal in da Bod of today during my only visit to Shetland in 2005, and visited the shop as it was at that time.
It is very good to see that Hillswick people have been able to pull together, not only just to revive what has been a very longstanding institution in Hillswick, but also to make it a very attractive and friendly place at the heart of the community. I wish it every success for the future.

Thanks aitch and david! The shop opened yesterday afternoon with an 'official' launch in the evening. We were delighted that Anna Irvine and Jannette Sandison agreed to launch the shop as both have had a lifetime's association there. We were also delighted that the shop was buzzing with folk and the till was ringing! Everyone has worked so hard to get the business back up and running. As Anna said in her excellent speech, the community now own the shop and it's up to everyone to make sure it keeps going. Here's a few piccies from last night: Anna and Jannette The ribbon is cut! Eileen, the shop manager, in the centre of the picture. Eileen used to work in the same shop over 20 years ago!

Thank you for your good wishes John and Hazel. You've been in the hearts and minds of local folk a lot lately as folk looked back on how you ran the shop so weel. Eileen brought a lot of her owld photos to the opening night, so there's been a lot of reminiscing! I'll pass on your good wishes to everyone. Hope you both have a lovely Christmas and it would be great to hear how you're all getting on, so that I can pass your news on to folk x
